Amber Delaney is a contemporary artist who resides in Hamilton, Ontario. Her education includes attending Dundas Valley School of Art in the Advanced Studio of Fine Art from 2017-2019, although she is predominately self-taught.
In recent years Amber’s artistic focus has shifted from hyper realistic still life drawings of inanimate objects and portraiture to more in depth issues, such as creating a more contemporary body of work dealing with chronic illness and body acceptance. Both of these came about in response to a personal battle with a chronic illness. With the realization that all her artwork somehow always leaned towards the darker side of life, and focused on things that had affected her, like deformity, death, and physical/ mental health issues, her current body of work is actually just a natural progression. Dealing with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome has been at the forefront of this new work. “The human body is something we all take for granted until something happens, then you realize how hard it is to live without being able to properly walk or bend or sleep. I’ve had to adjust mentally and physically to a quite rare connective tissue disorder that has affected my art for good and for bad. Although I feel that my having EDS and being an artist can bring awareness to this chronic illness and help others who may be in pain and feel alone.”
Along with this shift in focus her artistic style has also grown and adapted. It has become looser and freer, lending itself to feel more emotion rather than focus on perfection of technique. “I want to capture the intense feeling of loneliness, and exhaustion of having to put on a happy mask for people on a daily basis.”
Amber currently freelances while continuing to experiment and expand upon her most current body of work.
